Your dogs food bowl could be causing your dog health problems.

Sometimes I walk into my local pet store and feel a little overwhelmed with all of the choices. Is there really a difference between the raised bowl and the one with the steep sides?

Well, apparently there is a difference.

Did you know large dogs should eat from elevated bowls?

Does it really matter if Purina loses the Beneful lawsuit?

A bag of Beneful dog food.

Purina has been the leading manufacturer of pet foods globally for decades. Their slogan is “Pushing pet nutrition forward.”

My question is at who’s expense?

A class-action lawsuit filed in federal court in San Francisco alleges that a man’s three dogs were sickened and died after two months of eating Purina’s Beneful dog food. The firm handling the case says they have received “hundreds upon hundreds” of calls and emails from pet owners with similar stories, as the SF Examiner reports. Continue reading

Leash on life

Sometimes dogs aren’t the only ones who need second chances.

The Leash on Life program is a groundbreaking Pennsylvania program that pairs prison inmates with shelter dogs. The inmates take in dogs that are at high risk for being euthanized and go to live with an inmate where they will be trained to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizens test.

Higher training makes dogs more appealing to potential buyers, especially if they are a high euthanasia risk dog like a Pit Bull.

Really? Best in show? Right…

The Westminster Dog Show is the most prestigious of all dog shows. Breeders spend decades attempting to perfect their packs in hopes of competeing or winning “Best in show”.

Westminister has done many things for dog breeds over the years and one of those is contributing to ruining once majestic, healthy, working dogs.

Many animal activists and animal lovers are beginning to wonder about the ethicality of breeding dogs for what judges want to see in the show ring rather than breeders producing healthy, long-living animals.

One common practice that is becoming less popular for pet owners but is still mandantory in the show ring among dogs like the Doberman Pinscher and the Boxer is ear cropping & tail docking. There are currently only two reputable veterinarians in central Indiana that will crop a dogs ears and doc tails. Continue reading

You give your dog what?!

Jayda and Malakai both had a bout of tummy upset over the weekend. They both got new marrow bones and a stuffing-less cow toy that they absolutely adore.

Malakai spent the day on the couch after eating too much marrow bone.

Malakai spent the day on the couch after eating too much marrow bone.

However, instead of chewing on the bone a bit at a time they both devoured the raw bits off the bone and scraped the marrow out like pumpkin guts.

They loved it, but let’s just say their bellies didn’t.

Luckily, over the years I have picked up a few tips from my vet to help ease doggie diarrhea and vomiting.  Continue reading

What a night for Natalie’s Second Chance

Sylvia’s Brick Oven was exploding with people last night. I arrived around 5:30 p.m. and was already have difficulty finding a place to park. It was even reported by one guest that they had to park two whole blocks away! That’s a long distance here in the big town of Lafayette.

In fact, it was so busy that according to Natalie’s Facebook page this morning, Sylvia’s Brick Oven ran out of spaghetti and extended the event to Valentine’s Day at 10 p.m.

It was so great to see so many people of our community at Sylvia’s Brick Oven to support the dogs and Natalie’s Second Chance. Natalie herself was beaming with excitement and looked gorgeous in her long, black dress.

I had the opportunity to speak with Natalie for a short while and she told me that she is so incredibly grateful for all that the community does for the non-profit no-kill shelter. She told me that the shelter had veterinary bills in excess of $6,000 and hoped the SPAYgetti and NO meatBALLS event would put a dent in those bills. Continue reading

Doggie Date Night, anyone?

Love is in the air, the cold wind is blowing relationships closer together and pups in shelters are tucked into their kennels dreaming of finding their perfect humans and u-hauling it into the home of their dreams.

What better gift could you give yourself than a canine companion? A canine companion is someone who will be there when you wake up in the morning staring you in the face nose to cold, wet nose; someone that will be there to kiss away your tears when your human relationship fumbles through milestones. Someone that will love you even on your grungiest sweatpants and hair tie kind of day.
